Durham Tamil Association - " The Voice of Tamils in Durham" [in Tamil]
Durham Tamil Association is a non-profit, organization. It was formed in 2000 with the fundamental goal of providing an opportunity for Durham Tamil youth and adults to unite and participate in activities that enhance Tamil culture. DTA’s vision is to enable our youth to be pioneers in any profession they choose and be a role model in caring for elders and assist the needy in our community in Durham and our Tamil homeland in Sri Lanka. "We are the voice of Tamils in Durham" and ensure that all levels of government (Municipal-Mayors and Council, Provincial MPP's, Federal Members of Parliament are aware of the genocide against Tamils and take action to help the suffering Tamils in our Tamil homeland. We are one of the few organisations to "deliver what we promised" a much needed Anaesthetic Machine to Jaffna Hospital with your kind donation and generous support.
The core purpose of our 8th Annual Youth Festival is to ensure that "there's are no child left behind" in the Tamil community residing in Durham. If a child or youth has a talent or learning a skill we want them to them have an opportunity to perform and showcase their talent regardless of their experience! Our sincere thanks to our sponsors for your continued support.
We have had over 100 kids and youth performing this year and every every year for the past eight years. Especially this year in the aftermath of the civil war that took the lives of so many innocent Tamil children, our youth wanted to show the world the importance of "Unity and Peace".
Durham Tamil Association is proud recipient of the "Cultural Diversity Award" a coveted award by the City of Pickering, our members, youth and executive committee members are recipients several community awards for volunteerism and excellence in education and in their career in Canada.
We are pleased to announce that our initiatives this year in addition to being the voice of Tamils, include helping as many Tamil children to take part in the Tamil Schools run by the Durham District School board in Pickering and Whitby commencing in October, providing financial aid in the form of a grant for University students and to continue being involved with the mainstream community and to support anyone who needs help in our community .
We welcome everyone to attend a free information session about our University Grants and our upcoming programs and events planned for our "10th Anniversary in 2010" at 5PM October 25th at East Shore Community Centre in Pickering.
